Piet
Piet is a unique interactive artist's book inspired by the geometric abstractions of Piet Mondrian. Through paper engineering,
layered compositions, and sequential page turns, the work reinterprets Mondrian's iconic visual language, transforming the
experience of his paintings into an unfolding exploration of color, rhythm, balance, and space.
Artist's Statement
Piet Mondrian's work has long been a source of inspiration for my own artistic practice. I am continually drawn to the
extraordinary complexity he achieved through seemingly simple means—a carefully limited palette, geometric forms, and an
unwavering commitment to balance, rhythm, and proportion. His paintings demonstrate how restraint can become a powerful
vehicle for expression.
With Piet, I wanted to move beyond homage and engage in a visual conversation with Mondrian's ideas. Rather than reproducing
his compositions, I explored how his principles of structure, color, and spatial relationships might be translated into the language
of the artist's book. As each page is opened, geometric forms shift, overlap, and expand, inviting viewers to experience
movement, sequence, and discovery in ways that a static painting cannot.
The interactive nature of the book allows Mondrian's visual vocabulary to unfold over time. Every page turn creates new
relationships between color and shape, revealing that even within a disciplined framework, endless possibilities emerge. The
physical act of opening and manipulating the book becomes part of the composition itself, transforming the viewer from
observer to participant.
Creating Piet deepened my appreciation for Mondrian's remarkable ability to express harmony through reduction. Working within
his intentionally restricted visual language challenged me to think more deliberately about every line, every color, and every
spatial decision. Rather than limiting creativity, those constraints encouraged greater invention and a deeper understanding of
the principles that define his work.
Piet is both a tribute to one of my favorite artists and an exploration of how artistic ideas can evolve across time, medium, and
maker. It celebrates the enduring influence of art history while demonstrating that inspiration is not imitation, but an opportunity
to discover new possibilities through thoughtful dialogue with the artists who continue to shape our understanding of visual
expression.
