Journey
Journey is a handcrafted carousel artist's book that chronicles the evolving story of a family's life together through layered paper
engineering, silhouette imagery, and meaningful cartographic references. As the book opens into a circular form, each panel
reveals a new chapter, inviting viewers to move around the work and experience the narrative from multiple perspectives.
Maps of significant locations provide the visual landscape for the story, while carefully crafted silhouettes depict the progression
of life through courtship, marriage, parenthood, and childhood. Automobiles become markers of changing seasons of life,
symbolizing the many roads traveled and the memories formed along the way. Song lyrics and familiar places are woven
throughout the composition, creating a richly layered narrative in which ordinary moments become lasting milestones.
The carousel structure reinforces the cyclical nature of memory and relationships. Rather than presenting a single beginning or
ending, the work encourages viewers to revisit each scene, discovering new connections as they move around the sculpture.
Layers of paper create depth, allowing light and shadow to animate the composition and enrich the storytelling experience.
Both sculptural object and visual narrative, Journey reflects on the places we travel, the people who accompany us, and the
memories that quietly shape our lives. Though the book captures a particular moment in time, it also acknowledges that every
journey continues beyond the final page, with each new experience becoming part of an ever-evolving story.
Artist Statement
Journey is a reflection on the life my husband and I have built together. Although it tells the story of our family, it is ultimately
about the ways all relationships are shaped—not through a handful of extraordinary moments, but through the countless
ordinary ones that quietly define a lifetime.
The carousel structure offered the ideal form for this narrative because it surrounds the viewer rather than leading from a fixed
beginning to a predetermined end. As the book unfolds, maps, silhouettes, song lyrics, automobiles, and familiar places mark
the passage of time. Together they trace the evolution of a shared life: two people meeting, building a home, welcoming a son,
later a daughter, and watching their family continue to grow.
Many of the images are deeply personal, yet they speak to experiences that extend beyond my own family. A favorite road, a
meaningful song, or the memory of a car driven for years can become part of the geography of our lives. Places become
intertwined with relationships, and ordinary objects gradually accumulate extraordinary meaning because of the memories they
carry.
When I completed Journey in 2015, I realized the story was unfinished. The book documents a chapter of our lives, but not its
conclusion. Like every family, ours continues to change, celebrate, adapt, and move forward. The final page offers no ending
because life itself does not pause when the book closes.
For me, Journey is less about preserving the past than recognizing that a life shared with another person is always unfolding.
Every day adds another page, another memory, and another destination to a story that continues to be written.
