Hybrid

An original book structure that merges 

the mechanics of the carousel book with 

the sculptural geometry of the spherical book..

   

     Hybrid represents the convergence of two sculptural book forms that have defined my artistic.         

    practice. By merging the expanding architecture of the carousel book with the continuous 

    circular geometry of the spherical book, this original structure transforms the act of reading into 

    an immersive spatial experience. Rather than following a single sequence of pages, the viewer 

    encounters the work as a sculpture that reveals itself from every direction.

Laser-cut and hand-assembled papers create layered imagery that shifts continuously as the structure rotates and opens.

     Artist Statement

    Hybrid grew from a question that often guides my studio practice: What might happen if two familiar forms were allowed to 

   evolve together? As I explored the relationship between the carousel book and the spherical book, I became less interested in 

   preserving their individual identities than in discovering what could emerge between them. Through continual experimentation, 

   revision, and careful observation, a new structure gradually took shape.

   While developing this work, I found myself thinking about my maternal grandmother and the garden she lovingly tended. She 

   enjoyed grafting plants together, creating unexpected combinations that retained the character of each original plant while 

   becoming something entirely new. One of my earliest memories is watching a dogwood tree she had grafted with both white 

   and pink blossoms come into bloom. Seeing two colors flowering from a single tree left a lasting impression on me, revealing 

   that growth often occurs through connection rather than separation.

   That memory became the quiet foundation of Hybrid. The structure reflects the same principle I witnessed in her garden: distinct

   forms can coexist without losing their identity. Instead, each contributes qualities the other could not achieve alone. The result is 

   not a compromise between two ideas, but a conversation that allows both to evolve.

   Flowers became the natural subject for this work because they speak to cycles of growth, adaptation, and renewal. Their forms 

   echo the layered architecture of the book while reinforcing the relationship between natural processes and the act of making. 

   Just as a garden changes through seasons of cultivation and care, this structure emerged through repeated adjustment, 

   discovery, and patience.

   Hybrid reflects my ongoing interest in the book as a sculptural object—one that can be experienced not only through reading, 

   but through movement, space, and touch. It is an exploration of how familiar forms can be reimagined, and how meaningful 

   transformation often begins with the simple willingness to ask, What if?
