Artist Statement
My maternal grandfather never considered himself a teacher, yet some of life's most enduring lessons were learned beside him
on his farm. Summer mornings were spent picking blueberries, gathering eggs, watching horses and cattle move through the
fields, and riding on his familiar green John Deere tractor. Through these ordinary routines, he demonstrated that patience,
responsibility, and respect for the land are not taught through words alone—they are learned through daily practice.
This artist's book honors both the place and the person who shaped my understanding of the natural world. Each paper-cut
scene celebrates the quiet beauty of rural life: the changing seasons, the rhythm of farm work, and the animals that made the
landscape feel alive. Rather than documenting a specific location, the book preserves the values cultivated there—hard work,
stewardship, generosity, and an appreciation for simple moments that often become life's most treasured memories.
The layered structure of the book reflects the way these experiences accumulated over time. Each opening reveals another
aspect of the farm, allowing viewers to discover the landscape much as I did as a child—one moment, one chore, and one small
wonder at a time. The silhouettes invite imagination, encouraging each viewer to recall places and people who quietly influenced
their own lives.
Although deeply personal, this work is ultimately about legacy. The farm itself may change, seasons may pass, and generations
move forward, but the lessons rooted in that landscape continue to grow. Through paper, light, and carefully crafted form, I
hope to celebrate the enduring influence of a grandfather whose greatest gift was not simply the farm he tended, but the values
he cultivated in those fortunate enough to spend time beside him.
